YEL Update – 13th March 2026

YEL Update – 13th March

Thank you as always to all clubs, volunteers, referees, and parents who continue to support the league each week. As we move towards the final stages of the season, here are the latest updates from the YEL.

Here are the FIVE YEL updates for this week:

  • 🤫 FA Silent Support Weekend
  • 📘 YEL Rules Review
  • ⚖️ Discipline Update
  • 🏆 YEL Cup Finals & Festivals
  • ⚽ Season Update – Ball Size Change

🤫 FA Silent Support Weekend

The FA’s Silent Support Weekend takes place on 14th–15th March.

This initiative encourages spectators to support players through applause rather than instruction from the sidelines, helping create a positive environment where players can make their own decisions on the pitch.

The FA have confirmed record numbers of leagues are taking part this season, with even more joining following the first weekend in November.

Clubs can access the FA resource pack below to help share information with coaches, players and parents ahead of the weekend:

If posting on social media, the FA have asked that clubs and leagues use #SilentSupport.

📘 YEL Rules Review

Following the appointment of Julie as Acting League Secretary, the office team have begun reviewing the YEL Rules and will be proposing several updates for clubs to consider at the AGM in June.

Next week we will share the proposed changes with a small selection of clubs to gather initial feedback and consider any amendments before formally circulating them to all member clubs.

Of course, rules are important and in the event of disputes between teams they will always be applied. However, the approach of the YEL Board and senior staff is to work with clubs wherever possible and use fines only as a last resort. Our intention is not to take money from teams, or in some cases managers’ own pockets. We are here to support volunteers and clubs in getting things right.

⚖️ Discipline Update

As part of the league’s evolving approach to discipline matters, two members of the Discipline Team have stepped down this week, and we thank them for the time they have given supporting the league.

We would also like to thank the six volunteers who have come forward to support the Discipline process. We look forward to working with you, and this means the Discipline Team remains fully resourced with no impact to the league’s processes.

If anyone else would be interested in supporting the league in this area, please contact the YEL office.

🏆 YEL Cup Finals & Festivals

This season the YEL will host a record 70 Cup Finals.

Final dates and kick-off times will be confirmed shortly. Matches will be played across the weekends of 10/11 May and 17/18 May at Clifton, Ilkeston and West Bridgford, along with a small number of midweek finals at Basford United.

Alongside the finals programme, we are also preparing for the introduction of 3v3 football and staging 5v5 festivals for our younger teams.

To help support these events, the YEL are looking for additional volunteers to assist at Cup Finals and Festivals. A payment is available for attendance.

If you would like to be considered, please email office@yelonline.com so we can keep a record for upcoming events.

Any referees interested in being involved in Cup Finals are asked to complete the link that has been sent via Full Time. If you have not received this, please contact the YEL office.

⚽ Season Update – Ball Size Change

Looking ahead to next season, please note that for the 2026–27 season, Size 4 footballs will be introduced at U12 in preparation for the 9v9 playing format at that age group.

This change is designed to better align equipment with the transition in playing formats and support player development as teams move into 9v9 football.
